Pourable Shampoo Bar
Making Shampoo Bars yourself can be a messy affair… most online tutorials require you to make a sticky dough or use a shampoo bar.
For this project I made many experiments to get a shampoo bar you can pour. The best part is? It is soap-free so it is pH balanced for a happy scalp! :)
Disclaimer: I’ve had to change the method slightly from the video as I made a few realisations.
The SCS noodles dissolved better if Cocamidopropyl Betaine is added at an earlier stage.
Although this preservative can be added at higher temperatures, it is not ideal to add essential oils above 40 degrees.
I’ve updated the method now so you can have a better formulating experience :)
PHASE | INGREDIENT | PERCENT (%) |
WEIGHT (g) |
---|---|---|---|
Phase A | Sodium Coco Sulfate | 27.00 | 16.20 |
Pentylene Glycol | 20.00 | 12.00 | |
Glyceryl Stearate Citrate | 28.50 | 17.10 | |
Cetearyl Alcohol | 5.00 | 3.00 | |
Phase B | Cocamidopropyl Betaine | 15.00 | 09.00 |
Phase C | Rokonsal BSB-N | 1.00 | 00.60 |
Lactic Acid | 00.40 | 00.24 | |
Essential Oil Mix | 00.50 | 00.30 | |
Purple Kaolin Clay | 02.60 | 01.56 | |
Method
1- Measure Phase A and heat to 80 degrees so that all ingredients melt.
2- When Phase A has reached 80 degrees, remove from heat and add the Cocamidopropyl Betaine. It’s okay if there are a few SCS noodles still, adding the CAPB will help them dissolve. Stir gently.
3- Wait until mixture reaches 40 degrees and add your phase C ingredients one by one, stirring in between.
4- Pour in the mould. To have a pourable mixture, the formula should be between 35-40 degrees.
Notes
You can substitute the SCS for Sodium Cocoyl Isethionate if you prefer and have this ingredient at home. Keep in mind that SCI is not COSMOS approved though.
Replacing GSC with SUCROSE STEARATE and it did not work unfortunately as it turned out too soft :( Maybe Cetearyl Alcohol has to be increased for it to work but I haven’t tested this out yet. Will update here when I find a good substitute.
